Magic Medicinal Herb

Nine Reasons to Love This Magical Medicinal Herb

turmeric curcumin anti-inflammatory

Natural-anti-inflammatory good for joint pain, Crohn’s disease, intestinal issues, autoimmune disease & more

No I’m not talking about the kind you can smoke! I’m referring to the legal bright yellow colored one called Turmeric. Its medicinal value is nearly unsurpassed.

The curcumin from turmeric which is native to India and Southern Asia is used for its curative & protective effect for our body & mind…. Wait, what is the proper word use.. “effect” or “affect”?! In this case…both!

Turmeric has bio-active elements to it.  This means it has an effect on a living organisms even though it’s not a nutrient. Nutrients are essential to sustain life in a body where a bio active compound isn’t essential but it can aid the body to function properly.  The bio-active elements in turmeric are called curcuminoids of which curcumin is the most important. I like to say, “what King Kong is to monkeys… curcumin is to the curcuminoids!” (Sounds like the name of an alien people… the Curcuminoids!)

Anyway, Turmeric is the reason curry has its yellow color which incidentally used to be the way they dyed clothes forever ago. There was a time we didn’t have chemical dyes yet!!??

Here’s just 9 (of the many reasons) to love Turmeric/ Curcumin:

  • anti-inflammatory
  • protects the body against free radical damage
  • digestive tonic
  • improves action of the liver
  • has cholesterol lowering properties
  • blood thinning properties
  • supports healthy brain cells
  • positive effect on blood sugar
  • cancer’s enemy

Turmeric has been used to treat arthritis, joint pain, Crohn’s disease, and intestinal issues like: gas, diarrhea, stomach bloating. It’s also been used to treat liver problems, H. Pylori infection, high cholesterol, bronchitis, fibromyalgia and other autoimmune diseases that are systemic in nature (like lupus) as well as those that affect connective tissues (like one of mine diseases).

Anti-Inflammatory:

It’s fairly magic as an anti-inflammatory. OK, this is my opinion having had firsthand experience of Curcumin at high doses.  It is not a pain killer but less inflammation can mean less pain. Can I get an AMEN?

Blood thinner:

Other benefits include its anti-coagulant effect on the body which keeps the blood thin.

Your brain’s military:

For the brain, curcumin goes to work wiping out free radicals that can damage healthy cells. This sounds profoundly promising for my aging brain! lol

Cancer’s enemy:

It has proven to be protective against cancer. It turns on natural apoptotic (cell suicide) switches in cancer cells.

Blood sugar imbalances:

There have also been studies done with curcumin and blood sugar. Blood sugar imbalances and insulin resistance issues cause huge inflammatory conditions in the body. Elevated blood sugar creates glucose concerns and perpetuates the inflammatory condition. Curcumin modulates blood sugar and improves insulin function. Research on diabetic rats resulted in blood glucose stabilization… that’s pretty promising too.

I’ve been taking it now for probably a year. It is one of my daily must haves. Surely its part of the reason I reduced some anti-inflammatory meds. and eliminated a few others. I knew curcumin was curative but it wasn’t until I started taking it at high doses that I saw a difference. I had studied curcumin and various nutritionists & functional doctors told me I was “taking all the right supplements” but I wasn’t really progressing – until I met Dr. Smith. Then I learned the dosages I needed of these nutraceuticals.  I was taking 1 -2 a day when I needed to be taking 6-8. Imagine feeling better, having less pain and really getting solid tips for good health!? Gee isn’t that what you want from a doctor!?  This is what happens when you find a great doctor – a true health care advocate for you! But that’s probably a topic for another blog post.

Got Turmeric?

How did you and your Dr. determine that 6-8 was the right amount for you? I realize that the RDA (is probably best said as the amount which will probably do no harm but will probably not have much effect either) is very low especially in cases of vitamin B and D.

Good question. Dr Smith has been at this a long time and continues his education (unlike some docs who meet yearly minimums and stay in ‘old school’ mode) He knew how many MG to body weight was needed for me… and no I’m not listing my weight here because my husband reads this blog too lol.
As for your D & B vitamins comment, you are right. The good news is that vitamin B is water soluble so your body will absorb what it can at that time and you will urinate out the rest. Frequent and higher dosages don’t come with negative side effects — except maybe expensive pee if your body isn’t absorbing it 🙂

I guess I am kind of suspicious of Naturopaths that sell stuff. Is this really going to make a difference or just fund your next vacation? I am being skeptical and not complaining..(see next blog post teehee). What kind of Dr. is Dr Smith? You didn’t find him while I still lived on the Eastern side of the country. I would think the West Coast should have many more because of how health conscious everyone is here.

I agree the west coast should have many more! I wish I lived there… well, except for the cold weather part. I like warm water and sunshine more then snow but love hiking on the west coast. As for your suspicions… I get that. After trying SO MANY products and therapies claiming to remedy autoimmune diseases – I am too.

The good news is this blog is unfortunately (at least right now) funded by the writer: Me. I’m just someone who asked God why such bad things happened to her (and this was before the 2nd autoimmune disease) to which I felt a nudge & calling to write. Allegedly, I was to inspire others through their difficulty and know (from seeing me) that they too could survive and be given back 100x the loses. I just didn’t heed that calling right away.. call me Moses or Jonah …… or any other depiction of disbelief, fear & running the other way… But, Ive seen the burning bush…it may have even yelled at me and I now know I have to do this… money or not. So here I am.

I didn’t mention the specif brand of Turmeric/Curcumin I take. I can. I did mention Dr Smiths name (functional Dr & Neuro specialized chiropractor) I even tagged his site (I guess I should tell him lol). Ive seen a lot of functional doctors. He is by far the best and only one with whom I remained. Sometimes, finding the right Dr’s & therapies that help you is half the autoimmune battle!

    Mama Frat —

“6-8″….what? What is the unit of measure? And yes, I’d like to know which turmeric you take so I can compare it to mine.

    Thanks for all the info!
